Dell XPS 13 (2016, Gold Edition) review

The Good This updated XPS 13 has a stunning nearly edge-to-edge high-res display, and an upgraded processor and graphics.
The Bad This gold edition is very expensive, and battery life isn't as good as some other 13-inch laptops. The touchpad is tricky to use for some multitouch gestures.
The Bottom Line The excellent Dell XPS 13 series gets a high-end upgrade in this gold edition with improved performance, but also a high-end price to match.

Slide N Joy . Computer Accessory

Most people who have moved to multiple screens on their desktop computer will tell you that once you go multiple screen it's very hard to go back to a single display. You can use multiple screens on many laptops thanks to video outputs, but that is normally limited to in the home or office use only. A new system has debuted that is called Sliden'Joy and will add two more screens to you notebook that are portable and can be carried with you.

Sliden'Joy comes from a company based in Belgium and is seeking funds via Kickstarter. The system has three size options to give you more screens depending on the screen size your notebook has with 13, 15, and 17-inch offerings.

All of the screens have full HD resolution and work for Mac and PCs. The displays can rotate 180-degrees with aluminum hinges and promise significantly more screen real estate when working from your notebook. The Sliden'Joy system attaches magnetically to the back of the main laptop display.
Connectivity to the notebook for power and video comes via a single USB 3.0 port or a pair of USB 2.0 ports. You might notice in the images that the hinges aren’t aluminum, the prototype pictured had 3D printed hinges, but the final product will use aluminum. The Kickstarter campaign launched on July 6 and pricing is the same no matter the screen size you choose with one screen selling for $221 and a pair for $332.

Mobile accessory review: XOO Belt

The original wearable, rebuilt for modern lifestyles

The XOO Belt is a simple solution to an everyday problem: smartphone battery life. No new gadget to lug around but something we wear everyday anyway, redesigned with the help of some clever new technology.

It looks, feels and weighs about the same as a really nice belt… but comes with a mighty 2,100mAh of hidden charge and can charge pretty much any device.
Designed with a new breed of Lithium Ceramic Polymer flexible battery it’s also ultra safe, weather-resistant and prepared to take a beating.

How it works

Charging made simple

The charging wire is magnetically (and invisibly) nestled against the inside of the belt when not in use. Flick down to reveal, plug it in and pop your phone in your pocket—then carry on about your day. Unplug and flick back up when you’re done.
POCKET-CHARGING // You keep your phone in your pocket so that’s where we charge it.
TOP-UP-AS-YOU-GO // Power-up in the background as you go about your day.
WHEREVER, WHENEVER // Office, bar, train or half way up a mountain. If you’re wearing trousers it’s there when you want it.
NOTHING TO SHOUT ABOUT // No complicated set-up or strange bulges. Just a simple wire that hides away.

The Battery

Flexible, Mighty, Invisible

We’ve hidden six overlapping layers of cutting-edge flexible battery within each belt to give a base power of 1,300mAh of charge. Add this to the 800mAh in each buckle—for a total of 2,100mAh—and you’ve enough to fully charge an iPhone 6 with some left over. Works with iOS, Android and Windows devices.
YOU WON’T KNOW IT’S THERE // The battery is expertly sandwiched between the belt leather at manufacture. Completely invisible.
SAFETY FIRST // Made of Lithium Ceramic Polymer our batteries are non-reactive: poke them, cut them or drop them and you’ll still be safe.
NO HANGING AROUND // Transfers its full charge in around 3 hours. Another 3 hours to recharge.
UNIVERSAL CHARGING // Ships with a low-profile microUSB-to-USB charging cable, suitable for most devices. Add a Lightning adaptor for all your iOS needs.

Mobile accessory review: NanoHold

Highlights

  • Sticks on everything – Whatever you may need to attach your device to, from glass to metal to kitchen cabinets you’ll be able to easily do so.
  • Attaches to your phone – Once you have the Nanohold, you’ll find it easily attaches to your phone.
  • Everyday functionality – Whether you’re keeping track of your route with the GPS or just want to take that perfect selfie, the Nanohold is something you’ll use every day.

Product Review

The Nanohold is a great example of the kind of device that combines old technology with new ones in a fresh and useful way. Pretty much everyone who uses their smart phone frequently has occasionally wished for a way to be able to keep it propped up, and with this innovative little attachment you have exactly that.
The suction cup attaches directly to the back of your phone, tablet, or case. The easy installation and variety of surfaces the device can be used on adds a whole new level of tactile function. You’ll be able to attach your phone to cabinets, mirrors, or even the dash of your car for whatever purpose you might have in mind for it.
Once you have it attached all you’ll need to do is wipe it down with a cloth once in a while and the Nanohold will be able to grip anything you desire.

Conclusion

If you’ve been looking for a more convenient way to use your phone or tablet, this device is sure to make life a whole lot easier for you. While regular mounts might take some tools and know-how and only function in one area, the Nanohold works on virtually any non-porous surface and you can attach it to almost any device which has a flat back. Dropping and fumbling your phone while trying to prop it up doesn’t ever need to happen again, not with the cheap and easy to use Nanohold available on the market.

Mobile accessory review: Easy-Macro

If you love macro photography and the simple things in life, Easy-Macro is the rubber band for you. It’s a blue rubber band with an embedded acrylic lens that gives you roughly 1:3.5 magnificationThat’s it.

The minimalist design of the Easy-Macro has several benefits. First, it fits on just about any camera phone. That means you won’t have to shell out for another one when you upgrade your phone, and you can lend it to a friend if you're  so inclined. Second, it’s easy to carry. You can just leave it on your phone, or you can slip it around the credit-card-size plastic card it comes with and carry it in your wallet. Finally, it’s cheap. While $15 may seem pricey for a rubber band, it’s pretty reasonable when you consider that this one comes with a versatile mobile macro lens built in.

Summary:

The Easy-Macro is 10 percent material and 90 percent cleverness, and will give you a simple way to take a fresh look at the world through your smartphone.  If you’re looking for an inexpensive macro lens for your camera phone, you won’t find one that’s better, or more simply designed. Even when you’re not taking pictures, it comes in handy as a magnifier. Personally, I haven’t enjoyed a rubber band this much since Santa put that rubber band ball in my stocking.

What we like: Fits nearly any camera phone, pocket and wallet at $15.

What we don't like: Images show slight softness and color fringing at the edges, and minor distortion at maximum magnification.
